Another fantasy series joins the bevy of SFF works on television! V.E. Schwab’s alternate-universe fantasy novel A Darker Shade of Magic is heading to television—and better yet, she’s writing the pilot. Actor Gerard Butler’s production company G-BASE (Olympus Has Fallen and the forthcoming London Has Fallen) has acquired rights to adapt the book as a limited series.
Schwab shared the exciting news on Twitter, after sitting on it for over half a year. Working with producer Danielle Robinson, they’re designing a season-long arc of ten or twelve episodes, along the lines of Daredevil or Game of Thrones. She also made sure to assuage fans’ fears about Red London, Grey London, White London, and Black London translating from page to small screen:
Seriously. I am here b/c you are here. I get to keep writing b/c you keep reading. I get to try new things b/c you believe in me.

I know readers have bothhope and fear when it comes to adaptation, so let me say: A DARKER SHADE OF MAGIC will be done right, or not at all.

I can say that because my producer and I have been aligned on that at every. single. stage.

Also, the fact we have the opportunity to adapt the ADSOM for TV, where we can fully explore the worlds and stories, makes my heart sing.

But most of all:
No matter what happens, I am just clinging to the idea of this pilot getting cast so I can take a photo with Kell and Rhy and Lila.
